Shivpuri, formerly known as Sipri, served as the summer capital of the Scindia dynasty of Gwalior. The city’s name derives from Lord Shiva, and it holds deep historical and spiritual significance.
The dense forests were once royal hunting grounds for Mughal emperors and Scindia rulers. Today, these forests are protected as Madhav National Park, India’s 9th tiger reserve.
The city witnessed a significant moment in India’s freedom struggle when freedom fighter Tatya Tope was executed here in 1859.
